Northern Lithium
Unlocking a Critical UK Lithium Supply
Lithium is an essential component in the world’s transition to a zero-carbon economy, energising the rechargeable batteries that power electric vehicles.
And with the UK’s demand for lithium set to reach 75,000 tonnes per year by 2035, it’s vital that we secure a sustainable domestic supply of this precious mineral, extracted and processed in an environmentally responsible manner.
At Northern Lithium, we are currently exploring the commercial potential of lithium deposits identified in the northeast of England. If proven, the resources could provide up to 10,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium per year to UK gigafactories planned for the north-east and beyond, thereby reducing dependence on imported batteries and raw materials.
Weardale
Our initial lithium extraction project is focused on an area of approximately 185 sq km in Weardale, County Durham, where the presence of economically-viable grade lithium has been identified in saline brines within the area’s granite deposits around 270m underground.
