Northern Lithium’s initial project, to unlock a critical domestic source of Lithium for the UK, is in the North East of England within the Northern Pennine Orefield.

Having secured agreements with the owners of certain mineral rights there, including across large areas of Weardale, Co. Durham, Northern Lithium aims to develop up to 10 production sites, producing between 5,000 to 10,000 tonnes of battery grade lithium per annum.

With land access arrangements agreed, planning consent received, and an Environment Agency (EA) permit obtained for exploratory investigations, the company commenced drilling at Ludwell Farm, Eastgate, County Durham in May 2022.

By September 2022, Northern Lithium had completed drilling to a depth of over 750m and confirmed the presence of economically viable concentrations of lithium in brines from its initial exploration borehole, and started drilling a second borehole at Ludwell Farm.

The company has also now started the next stage evaluation of available Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) processing technologies to select which are most suitable to extract lithium at a commercial scale from the brines discovered.
