Northern Lithium is at the forefront of delivering a secure, sustainable domestic supply of lithium at scale for the UK, in order to meet expected exponential growth in battery demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and large-scale energy storage.  We are using UK sourced lithium brines, UK developed advanced DLE (Direct Lithium Extraction) technology and UK process engineering expertise to deliver this.

Founded in 2017, Northern Lithium has achieved key steps already towards proving the commercial viability of its lithium-in-brines project in the Northeast of England. We have secured what we believe is one of the largest single landlord exclusive mineral leases currently in the UK, successfully completed a feasibility drilling programme and long-term pump tests confirming commercially viable concentrations of lithium in brines at relatively shallow depths and with strong flow rates, and successfully produced >99.5% pure battery grade lithium carbonate at industrial scale using UK developed lithium processing technology. Furthermore, in February 2023, Northern Lithium and Cornish Lithium announced an important agreement to collaborate on accelerating the development of a sustainable, domestic supply of lithium for the UK at scale over the next decade.

Location and development rights

Northern Lithium is located next to the Northeast of England’s growing cluster of gigafactories and EV manufacturing hubs. We have up to 45 years’ exclusive feasibility, appraisal and production rights covering mineral rights owned by the Church Commissioners for England across circa. 240 sq kms (60,000 acres), of the Northern Pennine Orefield.

We are launching a fundraise programme to achieve key milestones over the next 12 months, commencing with an initial tranche now to accelerate near-term DLE demonstration plant trials and further pump tests

Strong results and next steps to commercial production

We have achieved strong results from our recent 2024 in-field testing programme, an important further step in proving the commercial viability of our lithium brines development project in the Northeast of England. These successful results have enabled the launch of the key next steps towards commercial production from 2027, including further scaled-up in-field evaluation tests and the installation and trialling of an in-field DLE demonstration plant in 2024 and the drilling of further boreholes in 2025.

Exponential growth in demand for energy storage capacity

Global lithium market demand is set to grow 2.5 times between 2024-2030 from 1.3 MMt Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) in 2024 to 3.3 MMt LCE in 2030. Lithium-ion battery requirements for both EVs and grid scale energy storage in the UK are increasing exponentially, adding to the supply chain pressure for lithium.  The UK’s EV market recorded a record-breaking month in August with EV sales rising 10% year on year.  Sales of EVs reached a 23% market share of new car market sales whilst hybrid cars grew to secure a 35% market share. It is forecast that the UK will need up to 80,000 tonnes of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) per year by 2030 and as much as 135,000 tonnes per year by 2040.
